Book & Claim: why combined registry & accounting matters

For many transport and logistics companies, Book & Claim is the most cost-efficient entry point towards decarbonization. Learn in this article why carriers, LSPs, and shippers should embrace a combined registry and accounting system to unlock new business opportunities.

Transparently tracking and easily assigning CO2e reductions within their supply chain makes it simpler for transport and logistics companies to manage their environmental impact. With shipzero’s industry-leading emissions management platform, they can achieve short-term sustainability goals with an immediate available clear audit trail of accredited calculations and reporting.

How transport & logistics companies benefit from independent registry & accounting

Transport and logistics companies need a reliable and standardized calculation for their regular transport emissions in the first place. Furthermore, in-depth data management with clear processes for clarification and quality management is required. The flexible nature of transport operations demands exact accounting – especially as claims cannot be reversed once activated.

The combination of a dedicated registry for Book & Claim transactions and an integrated transport carbon accounting system ensures that customers can rely on a full-service provider free from conflicts of interests, e.g., from fuel traders and freight brokers. Its services should be interoperable.

Elements of a Book & Claim System

With shipzero, transport and logistics companies can manage their emissions transactions in compliance with international standards: Our Book & Claim calculations methodology complies with ISO 14083:2023 and is built upon the Voluntary Market Based Measures Framework for Logistics Emissions Accounting and Reporting being released by the Smart Freight Centre in 2023. The integration of a primary data approach into this cross-modal guidance for marketable road, maritime and aviation reduction claims allows transport and logistics companies to allocate real CO2e emission declines on client-level and transport operating category (TOC).

Book & Claim: how it works with shipzero

Our emissions management platform enables transport and logistics companies to transparently track CO2e reductions within their supply chain. This simplifies the management of environmental impact and achievement of sustainability goals, without relying on regional availability constraints.

We do not participate in brokering transport services, nor do we sell or trade renewable fuels or transport assets, ensuring the independence of emissions records. shipzero validates its Book & Claim methodology annually with a reliable third-party verifier and makes all reasonable efforts to align claim statements with the Smart Freight Centre Market-based Measures framework for direct sustainable interventions.

Book & Claim key functionalities provided by shipzero

Our Claim Database requires completeness of input data like fueling events or low emission transportation services. Customers should provide proof of purchase and sustainability tracking for fuels, e.g., fuel cards, fleet management systems, and fuel product sheets.

We define and track the booking event validity within a maximum time span of twelve months and ensure with unique identifiers that no double-counting takes place.

Customers can view booking events available for claim, filtered by transport mode, TOC, fuel type, and validity. In their accounts, claims are shown with detailed transaction information (authorization, customer, TOC, time, total emission reduction and emission intensity).

After automated validation checks of the input data, we calculate both a baseline emissions profile of a fossil-based comparator like a country-specific Diesel Blend (B7) and the actual attribute-specific emissions of the booking event. In our example the delta between the calculation of a transport with sustainable fuel like HVO100 and one with Diesel Blend (B7) would illustrate the reduction of CO2e.

shipzero’s accounting system allows the allocation of GHG emission reductions within our customer network to selected transports and time periods. Customer balances will be automatically updated after reduction retirement. Confirmed claims are publicly available for verification through a unique ID on our website.

The calculated emissions and reductions are validated for data completeness and accuracy and reported through the Claim Statement. This reflects the carbon reduction achieved through the Book & Claim mechanism.

All transactions are traceable. Users can access comprehensive reports and claim statements that document the emissions calculations and checks performed.

To retain the integrity of the system, all bookings once claimed on the Book & Claim registry are marked and retired. This prevents the same booking from being sold more than once.

Conclusion

Book & Claim requires precise emission calculations and robust data management with comprehensive clarification and quality assurance procedures. shipzero maintains an independent market position and provides a clear audit trail of emissions calculations and reporting. We collaborate with key stakeholders to further develop the Book & Claim framework towards broader adoption and advance the global standards for sustainable transport emissions.
