How Jerich International meets rising customer expectations for detailed CO2e emissions reporting

Logistics customers are increasingly requesting detailed reports on transport emissions. These verifications are time-consuming and costly. Jerich International faced this major challenge and partnered with us. Now they send individualized reports with accurate emissions data at the shipment level.

Jerich International: global player with family roots

Jerich International is a global full-service logistics provider with 33 locations in 22 countries. With annual revenue exceeding €300 million, the family business founded in 1969 offers much more than just transport services. Their range includes IT solutions as well as warehouse and intralogistics services, approaching a 4PL provider that creates added value for the entire supply chain through “holistic logistics solutions.” About two-thirds of the company’s revenue comes from customers in the “Forest Products” sector, complemented by automotive suppliers and companies from the FMCG and food industries.

As an “asset light” logistics company, Jerich International operates about 200 of its own vehicles worldwide. Most transports are handled through contractors – some working exclusively for Jerich International, others purchased through the spot market. Additionally, around 600 vehicles from partner fleets are operated under Jerich’s direct management. Since 2022, the company has also been using trucks with CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) as a more environmentally friendly fuel alternative to diesel and has been recognized for its sustainability efforts with EcoVadis Gold (Jerich Europe) and Platinum (Jerich USA) certifications.

Challenge: Increasing requests for professional emissions reporting

“Our customers are increasingly being asked about their Scope 3 emissions by their own customers. They want to know precisely how large their carbon footprint is from our transport, storage, and handling activities,” explains Manfred Zach, Quality Manager at the Jerich Group. For individual transport route tenders, CO2e emissions are increasingly becoming a decisive criterion.

These rising customer requirements for precise emissions data were difficult to meet with the company’s limited resources. Initial attempts to create emissions reports themselves using online tools proved “time-consuming and unsatisfactory.”

Jerich International wanted to implement a verified, unified, and scalable system that could process large shipment and data volumes and map multimodal transports. While searching for a suitable professional provider, Zach began discussions with shipzero in 2023. Besides data granularity, Jerich International was particularly impressed that decarbonization potential for individual transport routes could be simulated with the industry-leading CO2e emissions management platform.

Implementation: detailed emissions calculations for multimodal transports at the shipment level

After thorough examination of the available data, automatic data transfer was first implemented through existing interfaces. Missing exact address information initially made it difficult to distinguish between tours and shipments or orders. However, by linking transport and master data, exact customer warehouse locations could be identified.

In a structured process, shipzero enriched the datasets accordingly. “The number of cases requiring clarification has dropped from double digits to a low single-digit percentage. This is enormous progress that significantly relieves our internal processes,” Zach emphasizes.

Jerich International can now correctly calculate emissions per transport segment from the starting to the receiving freight forwarder and reliably, regularly, and at the push of a button send CO2e reports. According to Zach, customers appreciate the automatically and frequently created reports with extremely positive feedback.

“With shipzero, we have found a strategic partner who helps us offer our customers increasingly environmentally friendly transport solutions in the future.”

Outlook: staying committed despite relaxing regulations

Despite possible relaxation of legal requirements, Jerich International remains true to its sustainability efforts: “We are continuing on this path – postponed does not mean canceled,” Zach affirms the long-term strategy.

Jerich International wants to increasingly offer its customers alternative, more environmentally friendly transport solutions. The partnership with shipzero can play a key role in achieving these ambitious sustainability goals and further strengthening the company’s position as a responsible logistics service provider.
